Thanks to deposits of sulfur contained in its matrix, the Lapis Lazuli crystal stands out in the world of gemstones with its deep sapphire blue color. It also contains prosperity and abundance qualities with its unique variations of gold and white specks from Calcite and Pyrite deposits.
In ancient times Lapis Lazuli was most highly regarded because of its beautiful color and the valuable ultramarine dye derived from it. Its name comes from the Latin lapis, “stone,” and the Persian lazhuward, “blue.” It is rock formed by multiple minerals, mostly Lazurite, Sodalite, Calcite and Pyrite, and is a rich medium to royal blue with gold flecks (pyrites). Lower-grade Lapis is lighter blue with more white than gold flecks, and is sometimes called denim Lapis.
Lapis Lazuli boosts the immune system, purifies blood, lowers blood pressure, cooling and soothing areas of inflammation. It alleviates insomnia and vertigo, and overcomes depression. Lapis Lazuli benefits the respiratory and nervous systems and the throat, vocal chords, and thyroid, cleanses organs, bone marrow and thymus.
Lapis Lazuli is beneficial to the throat, larynx, and vocal chords, and helps regulate the endocrine and thyroid glands. [Gienger, 54] It overcomes hearing loss and other problems with ear and nasal passages. [Hall, 173][Eason, 223]
Lapis Lazuli enhances circulation and improves cardiac rhythm. [Megemont, 112] It reduces vertigo and lowers blood pressure, and is thought to alleviate insomnia. [Hall, 173]
Relieve oozing or septic sties, and other eye infections, by rubbing the area with a piece of Lapis heated in warm water. Once cooled, the water can then be used for an eye bath. A Lapis heated in sunlight, reduces bruising and is good for skin problems and insect bites. [Megemont, 112]
Lapis is beneficial for women suffering from menstrual irregularities, and relieves cramps, stiffness and lumbago. [Megemont, 112] Lapis Lazuli relieves general pain and inflammations, and is especially effective against migraine headaches. It aids the nervous system and brain disorders, and is believed to help with attention-deficit, autism and Asperger’s syndrome. [Gienger, 54][Hall, 173][Eason, 223]
Jade has been used for eons in China and Central America as an ornamental and religious stone of deep significance. Jade is a name that was applied to ornamental stones that were being brought to Europe from China and Central America. It wasn’t until 1863 that it was realised that the name “Jade” was being applied to two different minerals, Jadeite and Nephrite.
Sunstone is used to treat chronic sore throats, and to reduce stomach tension and ulcers. Placed on the Solar Plexus, it is excellent for lifting depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder, and is helpful in chasing away nightmares. [Megemont, 173][Eason, 116][Melody, 629][Hall, 284]
Howlite is composed of hydrous calcium borate and is opaque. Howlite is generally white to cream with fine grey or black veining. It often forms in nodules which resemble cauliflower heads. Howlite is used for cabochons, decorative objects, beads, small carvings or jewelry components.
Anyolite is the name used to describe the naturally occurring combination of Green Zoisite with deep red Ruby stone. The largest deposits of the lovely combination of Ruby Zoisite are in India, but it is also found in Zambia Africa. The Zoisite within the stone is primarily a clear medium green, and it combines well with the deep magenta-red of the ruby in the stone. This mineral has masses of prismatic crystals that combine the physical properties of zoisite and ruby. Its zoisite composition becomes the base while its ruby properties are scattered throughout the structure.
Leif Eriksson and other Viking explorers who ventured far out into the Atlantic Ocean, away from any coastline that would help determine position, used thin pieces of Iolite as the world’s first polarizing filter. Looking through an Iolite lens, they could determine the exact location of the sun and navigate safely to the New World and back. [ICGA]
Tridacna is the most white substance in the world, it is also a rare organic gemstone. It’s made from a large clam shell and is known for looking like white porcelain.

Kyanite is an aluminum silicate mineral, often occurring as long, striated bladed crystals that may be transparent or translucent with a pearly sheen. The most common colors in metaphysical use are blue streaked with white, indigo, green, and black, though Kyanite may occur in white, gray, pink, yellow, and most recently discovered orange. Kyanite comes from the Greek work, kuanos or kyanos, meaning “deep blue,” and was once commonly called Disthene, which means “two strengths.” It is also known as Rhaeticide and Cyanite. Its most identifiable feature is its anisotropism, the ability to cleave perfectly in two directions with two distinctly different hardnesses on the perpendicular axes. [Simmons, 223][Wikipedia.org]
